The kids were really looking forward to this, white water rafting down the Urubamba River. It's dry season now so the water level was pretty low, and the river calm most of the way. That was until we got to the last twenty minutes, class 3 rapids till the end. These two monkeys loved it and kept asking for bigger ones! The ride down the river was not just about splashing through rapids, it was mostly an opportunity to take in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains as we drifted slowly down the longest river in Peru.
Nice and dry as we start out.
Coming into our first rapid
Keep paddling!
Little boss at the helm!
While we were here in the Sacred Valley, we got to spend some time with a family in the Huilloc community up in the Urubamba province. We were given a little glimpse into their daily life, invited into their home and fed a traditional lunch prepared by the family. Touristy as this may sound, it was nonetheless a memorable experience for the kids to see what life is like, and hopefully to realise and appreciate just how fortunate they are. Here in these areas the people live without heating, cook on open fires, children have to walk for an hour, sometimes two, to get to school but yet they still live a happy and fulfilled life.
Ponchos for boys and, skirts and blankets for the girls.
Hmm those travel pants just don't quite fit the attire 😅
Appetising, a vegetable corn pattie.
Quinoa fried rice. This was delicious, I'll have to replicate it when we get home.
Time to do some shopping. Things weren't exactly cheap but well, at the the money was going directly to this family.
Our last stop of the day was the Ollantaytambo Fortress. This Inca fortress was built around the middle of the 15th century. How the stones were transported here in one piece from the quarry over the hill remains a mystery. Each stone is said to weigh more than 50 tons.
View of the village from the top.
Inca shelves. Big enough to fit even a little person 😆.
Corn, quinoa, potato farming down in the valley.
And of course there's always a market selling trinkets very close by.
