From Buenos Aires we flew to IguazĂș. We went from city living to jungle life, staying at the La Cantera Jungle Lodge. The minute we stepped out of the airport, the humidity hit us. It started pouring that night, and didn’t stop raining the next morning. So we decided to change our itinerary, rather than going to the Falls, we went south to a geomine and a Missionary instead. The drive took around two hours but the sky was clear where we were heading and it turned out to be a really lovely day.
The Wanda Mines is a working mine close to Puerto IguazĂș known for its production on semi-precious stones like agate, amethyst, topaz, jasper and different types of quarts. When we got there, it was obvious that this place is targeted at tourists with its large showrooms selling all kinds of precious stone items. Still, it was an interesting excursion, going into the mines.
So much bling bling!
This little one was mesmerised by all the glittering gems.
Entrance of one of the working mines.
Less valuable stones left in piles by the side of the mine. We were so tempted to pick them up!
The San Ignacio Missionary is a Jesuit missionary founded in 1610, which in its zenith was home to around 4,000 Guarani people, the indigenous inhabitants people in the area. We were told by our guide as we walked through the grounds that the movie “The Mission” was inspired by this place. I remember watching the movie with my parents when I was little and I can still recall some scenes here and there. Looking at the ruins now, it was hard to imagine what life was like then, buzzing with activity and all the people.
